The course will examine the ways in which scientists explain diverse phenomena when they cannot or do not want to refer to the causes of these phenomena. For example, can we explain certain characteristics of animals using the properties of numbers? Can we explain all physical laws using certain types of mathematical symmetries? Is it acceptable to explain the inflationary expansion of the universe using the same simplifying assumption as the solidification of a supercooled liquid? The main goal of the course is to find some common characteristics of these special types of explanations.
