Stories are not usually meant to instruct, but rather to touch readers in some way, to move them, to transform them. Ted Chiang (born 1967) and Italo Calvino (1923-1985) achieve this through science. The aim of the course will be to explore how scientific concepts and theories can be used to develop and construct compelling stories, and why these stories would not be as breathtaking if different building blocks were used. At the end of the semester, graduates of the course should be convinced that science also has an aesthetic and emotional dimension. And they should be able to describe this dimension.
