Course content
Basic topics: univariate statistics descriptive statistics, sample, population and hypothesis testing basic data visualization (dot plots, histograms, box plots, etc.) and interpretation exploratory data analysis relation to quantitative linguistics Multivariate statistics: An introduction to the R language relationships between variables, redundancy, normalization measuring distances and similarities visualization of multivariate data (MDS, PCA, SVD, tSNE, etc.) clustering methods and applications (hierarchical clustering, k-means, DBSCAN, etc.) relation to natural language processing and text vector models relation to machine learning (k-NN methods, SVM, etc.) Issues of data mining and interpretation of results: Cognitive bias design of experiments practical examples

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to prepare students to work with a variety of data and to be able to extract new information from this data that would otherwise be inaccessible. The course generally addresses the methods and pitfalls of analyzing any concrete or abstract objects described by one or more properties, with particular attention to practical applications. Students will also be introduced to the programming language R, in which they will solve concrete practical problems.
