Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce to students basic concepts of modern semiotics and outline the basic features of semiotic analysis. The theoretical part familiarizes students with basic terminology, manner of asking questions in and subject matter of semiotics, its internal division and history; the concept of sign, its definition, models, typologies, basic properties, as well as problems and effects of using signs in descriptions of concrete meaningful phenomena; the key concept of code, its history, basic rules of its functioning and Eco's theory of codes, or< consequences of established code concepts, roles of subject in communication and determination of meaning by means of communicative interaction. The theoretical part will be complemented by part focused on discussion and practical application of semiotic concepts in descriptions of concrete phenomena, especially advertising messages.
Basic knowledge of semiotics as cultural criticism, ability to analyse communicates using the semiotic method
