The course Encyclopaedia of Linguistics is part of a broader project which aims to create an electronic encyclopaedia of linguistics and to use and take advantage of results of other courses (in form of encyclopaedic entries) of the Department of General Linguistics. Doctoral students will create several entries related to their specializations (topics covered in their dissertations). The aim of the course is to also put together a student team of editors who will edit the entries. The course will provide students with knowledge of structure and required properties of scholarly texts. Attention will be given to character of primary and secondary literature and manner of its excerption (paraphrases, quotations, plagiarizing), manner of referencing in text and creation of complete bibliographic records. Students will learn about genre specifics of encyclopaedic entries and encyclopaedias, their form and purpose in the context of scientific expression and style. Explanation will be demonstrated on examples (positive and negative) of encyclopaedic entries authored by students and entries in Czech and international encyclopaedias. Students will at the same time try their hand at editing work and preparation of scientific text for publishing, learning to edit in the MediaWiki system.
