The course introduces students to The Beatles, the most famous band of the twentieth century. Its aim is to explore the history of popular music and popular music culture through the phenomenon of The Beatles.
Students will gain an understanding of the role and significance of The Beatles in the context of twentieth-century popular music and music culture as a whole, become familiar with key approaches in popular music studies, and develop their skills in working with scholarly literature. |

The phenomenon of The Beatles will be examined from a range of perspectives within popular music studies, including music historiography, the sociology of music, and music analysis. The course combines lectures with seminar assignments completed throughout the semester, based on the study of scholarly literature, documentary films, and other materials. Students will be assessed on the basis of assigned coursework, class participation, a listening test, and a final oral examination. Required reading and additional materials for individual lectures will be available on Moodle. |
