Course content
Getting to know the five basic historical auxiliary sciences: Paleography, Codicology, Epigraphy, Diplomatics, Chronology and their role in musicological research. Topics: 1. Paleography - theory on the evolution of writing - development of the discipline - division of the written sources - different ways how to work with sources - the evolution of writing 2. Codicology - theory of the literary manuscripts - development of the discipline - chronicles, legends 3. Epigraphy - theory of the legends - development of the discipline - division of the epigraphic sources - importance to the work of the historian and musicologist 4. Diplomatics -theory of the official manuscripts - development of diplomatics in the Czech lands - main sources of the diplomatics - royal offices in the past, papers, documents, facsimiles 5. Chronology - theory of the time measurement in the past, historical calendars - development of the discipline - time measurement in the past - historical calendars - calculations and transfers of units

Learning outcomes
Orientation in all the basic disciplines Auxiliary historical sciences, knowledge of the development of writing, convert ancient dates and time units etc. and their practical use in the work of the musicologist.
Student will learn how to work with archival material.
