Course content
1. Semiological analysis of Gregorian Chant 2. Isorythm as a structural principle of medieval polyphony 3. Counterpoint in the Renaissance Era 4. Prima e seconda prattica 5. Affect theory and musical rhetoric of Baroque 6. Dramma per musica 7. Musical symbolism in the works of J. S. Bach 8. Credo: drama in the mass composition 9-12. Student presentations

Learning outcomes
The aim is to acquire less conventional analytical techniques historically related to the music of earlier periods.

Basic orientation in the musical genres and composers before 1800.
