Topics covered: 1. Origins and development of music sociology. 2. Issues in methodology: empirical and theoretical sociology, sociological analysis of music, Weber's ideal types and classification in music sociology, evaluation and evaluation neutrality. The sociology of tonal systems. 3. Czech sociomusicology. 4. The social status of a musician. 5. Social history of music: medieval musicians. 6. Social history of music: the courtly music culture in the 17th and 18th centuries. 7. Social history of music: public concert ? the representative institution of bourgeois musical culture. 8. Social history of music: domestic music-making and music amateurs in the 18th and 19th century. 9. Social history of music: sociology of opera. 10. Women in music. 11. Critical theories of mass culture. Brief history of music industry. 12. Empirical research.

| Learning outcomes |
|
The course focuses on terminology, theoretical concepts, techniques and methods of sociological research. Attention will be also paid to interpretation of seminal texts and practical training.
Knowledge of the social structures of the music life and its protagonists, in other words, operating of the music institutions throughout the various stages of the music history; this gives students a better understanding of the music development. After completing the course students will significantly expand their competence in upcoming professional activities in the area of organization and management of the music life. |
