Course content
The topic is sorted both chronologically and geographically: 1/ Opera, operett, musical, periodisation 2/ Jazz opera or opera musical? Interwar musical (Rodgers a Hammerstein, J. Kern, G. Gershwin, R. Rogers) 3/ Shakespeare, Cervantes and cancan. Situaton after 2nd World War (C. Porter, M. Leigh) 4/ Immortal hits: My Fair Lady (F. Loewe), West Side Story (L. Bernstein), Les Miserábles (C. M. Schönberg) 5/ Between revue and musical comedy: Funny Girl (J. Styne) and Hello Dolly! (J. Herman) 6/ Muzikál as a historical tragedy: Cabaret (J. Kander), Fiddlar on the Roof (J. Bock) 7/ Muzikál as a spiritual rock opera and protest: Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita (A. L. Weber) 8/ Muzikál as a fairytale for adults: Fantom of the Opera (A. L. Weber) 9/ Muzikál and so-called small form theatres, muzical as a dance: Billy Elliot (E. Learning outcomes
Entertaining music theatre and so-called light genres always followed opera in the form of spectacular aristocratic performance. 20th century musical continued successful entry of operetta into opera houses in the 19th century. Musical itself gave rise new construction of theatres and began to oppress opera from everyday reception in a mass measure. Nevertheless, many musicals followed the best treaditions of music theatre across history and genres. Historical context of musica create an assumption for an analysis of libretto and musical structure (pop song, scene, dance figures etc.).
Student will be able to define musical as a specific type of 20th century music theatre and differentiate its various forms both in the development and in genre. Historical survey which combines view on musical productions in Europe, America or in India is inseparably connected with an analysis of selected works (libretto, music, theater and film versions etc.).
Prerequisites
Overview on the history of European music, both 19th and 20th centuries historical background.

Analysis of libretti and studium of specialized literature.
