The course is taught exclusively in English; there is no Czech syllabus. This course will examine current trends and issues in the field of American Music Theory. We will discuss how theorists use different methodological approaches to analysis, pedagogy, music theory, and media. In addition, we will look at essential materials like scholarly journals, edited collections, and audio/visual publications to understand that questions theorists are asking now, what repertoire they consider, and how they engage with music and theories of the past. In the course of this study, we will look at how American and European music theory compares with respect to topics and publication outcomes.
Students will be assigned readings and audio/visual publications to discuss in each class. They will come from the top journals in the United States. The instructor will ensure that readings are not too lengthy or dense but rather are useful for getting the gist of particular ideas or approaches. Participation in discussions and written response will be important.

Students will be able to: - Analyze a range of contemporary American music theory scholarship, identifying central questions, methodologies, and repertoires addressed in leading journals and publications. - Compare and evaluate analytical approaches to tonal, post-tonal, and popular music, demonstrating the ability to apply selected methods to diverse musical examples. - Critically assess the relationships between American and European theoretical traditions, articulating key similarities, differences, and areas of cross-influence. - Synthesize multiple theoretical perspectivesincluding pedagogy, public music theory, and interdisciplinary approachesinto clear written and oral arguments. - Engage thoughtfully in scholarly discourse through discussion and written responses, demonstrating the ability to summarize, critique, and extend current debates in twenty-first-century music theory.
