Course content
Content: this subject aims to make a survey of Dvořák's music in relation to his life. Each of the symphonies and main songs´cycles, xchamber music ae well as operas and cantata works will be analysed showing how Dvořák constructed their compositions. Brief description: selected works from Dvořák´s symphonies and chambre music will be analysed in detail. In addition, students should be prepared to go on a 2 day excursion to Dvořák country, staying overnight in Prague. Visits will be made to the Dvořák Museum and to Nelahozeves, the birthplace of Dvořák.

Learning outcomes
The goal of the subject is to obtain solid knowledge of Dvořák´s work on the base of the social situation in the Czech lands in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Historical lectures will be followed by analysis of selected works. Analytical remarks will be made to compare Dvořák´s compozisiton with thouse by Smetana, Fibich, Janáček, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, Brahms, Tschaikovski, Suk and others. Themes: 1/ Sources, literature, archives, Antonín Dvořák Museum in Prague, international Dvořák Societies 2/ Dvořák´s family, places of stay, music education 3/ Early works till 1860s 4/ First successes, grants from Vienna 5/ Moravian and Slavonic era 6/ Cantata and oratorio in Dvořák´s work 7/ Opera till departure to America 8/ Symphonic works till departure to America 9/ Chamber music till departure to America 10/ American period 11/ Songs 12/ Symphonic poems 13/ Opera after teh arrival from America
On completion of this subject students should be able to read a score of Dvořák´s music, to analyze the structure of the music, to understand the symbols used in the music and therefore describe the narrative of the music. In addition, students will understand how and wheather Dvořák´s music is authobiographical and where is fits into Western European music. Skills: ability to read an orchestral score is an asset, but not completely necessary. In addition to English language, some basic knowledge of German language would be an advantage.
Prerequisites
Pre-requisite : no specific pre-requisites; but the lectures will be given in English. A good knowledge of spoken English is required.

Requirements : (i) A short personal reflective essay entitled What Dvořák's music means to me, preferably in English, but may be in Czech; (ii) minimum attendance of 80% of the lectures.
