Learning outcomes
The course is divided into two parts. The first session, with the head and members of the department, focuses on administrative matters and issues relating to the course of study. The following session is devoted to screening students' video self-portraits, which, in practice, reflect the students' role as active content producers in today's digital environment. The second part will focus on providing a basic insight into the contemporary (Czech) media landscape, ownership structures and journalistic practices in the digital age. In addition to familiarising students with the relevant terminology, the aim is to guide them towards a deeper reflection on the media scene and to develop their ability to approach information critically (the transferable skill of information literacy). Students will learn to analyse the relationships among media, platforms, and audiences, whilst clearly articulating their findings in an academic text.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: - identify and define the key elements of the Czech media landscape and ownership structures. - critically evaluate sources and recognise techniques of manipulation or disinformation (Information literacy). - be able to structure an academic text, argue based on evidence and adhere to citation standards (Written communication). - analyse the impact of digital platforms on the journalism profession and audience behaviour.
Prerequisites
These are not specified; an interest in media events and the ability to think critically are expected.
