Course content
The course introduces learners to the basics of scientific work - procedures and rules of generating and verifying scientific knowledge and equip them with the basic knowledge needed to carry out research investigations focused on the analysis of messages. The course introduces not only the general principles of social science methodology, but also the various stages of preparing and conducting specific investigations designed in relation to addressing issues related to a crisis event. It focuses on the practical level of research and the student learns specific procedures of quantitative and qualitative document analysis. Emphasizes the importance of the preparatory phase of research, setting objectives, formulating research questions, and selecting adequate research design, data collection and analysis procedures. The empirical work is practiced by conducting a mock research investigation. The course provides students with the basic knowledge necessary to write an empirical thesis and prepares them for independent empirical work in the field of study. Course content: 1. 2. Mix methods: combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of document analysis 3. Preparation of empirical research - from topic to problem; research aim and formulation of research questions 4. Design of empirical research - design of research strategy, preparation of research project 5. Representativeness - research unit and sample selection 6. Quantitative methods of text analysis - content analysis 7. Quantitative content analysis - preparation of coding book data collection (coding), data analysis and interpretation 8. Quantitative analysis techniques - frequency linguistics, machine coding 9. Qualitative text analysis procedures - semiotic analysis (first, second, third level of tagging) 10. Grounded theory 11. Qualitative approaches to text analysis - structural analysis, narrative analysis 12. Final research report - data interpretation 13. Presentation and critique of research projects in progress

- To introduce students to the basics of scientific work; - teach them the procedures and rules of generating and verifying scientific knowledge; - equip them with the basic knowledge needed to carry out research investigations; - to make available to students the general principles of social science methodology.
Course outputs: completed partial research projects processing qualitative and quantitative data Competences acquired: - Students will learn the practical sequence of research investigation steps in the implementation of an empirical project in the field of message analysis. - The student demonstrates interrelated knowledge of theoretical and methodological backgrounds and empirical research procedures and is able to independently carry out a research investigation. - The student is oriented in the terminology and methodology of social sciences and is able to apply general methodological requirements to the implementation of research in the social sciences and humanities. - The student demonstrates an understanding of the role of individual communication channels in crisis situations and is able to empirically analyse their content.

Successful completion of the course requires a final analytical research report of approximately 5,000 words on the findings of the team's research. The student is required to be prepared for individual classes throughout the semester. Preparedness is defined as the ongoing completion of the assigned practical sub-tasks of the group-based, semester-long research project and knowledge of the relevant assigned required readings.
