The course will introduce students to the origin, development and demise of conflicts that have a religious or culturally based argumentation. Cultural and religious conflicts are presented at the level of personal relations and social relations between groups or communities, as well as at the state or interstate level. Learners are guided to recognize and understand that these differences may include language, religion, ethnicity, traditions, values, norms of behavior, and other aspects. Emphasis is placed on an introduction to the basic characteristics of cultural and religious conflicts, which include differing cultural values, different identities and affiliations to different communities and societies, disputes over territory, language differences, and religious differences; and related discrimination and inequality or political factors. Therefore, learners are presented with options for resolving these conflicts, which require sensitivity to cultural differences, the capacity for dialogue between the parties involved, and efforts to find common understanding and peaceful solutions. As the analysis of cultural conflicts is dealt with by a number of experts and institutions, especially in the fields of international relations, sociology, ethnology, anthropology and of course theology and religious studies, the course will also be taught by academics from various disciplines.
