The aim of the course is to provide the students with ability to search for, or independently and systematically obtain, data on social reality, to understand it, to understand the possibilities and limits of its explanatory power and learn to interpret it from the perspective of social sciences. During the course, the students will get introduced to two basic approaches in the field of social science research (quantitative and qualitative). The first part of the course will be dedicated to the quantitative approach, which will focus on the logic of work in the quantitative paradigm. Students will master the basic research techniques (standardized interview, questionnaire) and the possibilities of working with the data, and the course will give them an insight to the ways of interpreting the results of quantitative empirical surveys. The second part of the course will focus on acquiring the skills needed to work in the qualitative paradigm, selected research techniques (in-depth and narrative interview, observation) and the possibility of working with the obtained data. The course will provide insight into the ways of interpreting the results of qualitative research. The course will also include practical exercises.
After completing the course, students will be qualified both to make requests for and read the qualitative studies in the field of social science research. |
