This course will provide a broad overview of Greek literary history and culture from Homer into the Roman period. We will survey the major texts and authors of ancient Greek epic, drama, narrative, and rhetoric. The texts will be discussed in the context of the social, and cultural transformations which affected the ancient Mediterranean. Students will acquire familiarity with a wide variety of literary sources (all read in translation) and selected secondary literature as they will learn to assess and appreciate ancient Greek civilization.
