The course "On the Preservation of Good Health." Selected Topics in the History of Early Modern Medicine 1 focuses on selected aspects of the history of medicine in the early modern period. The semester-long course introduces a range of methodological approaches and research topics related to concepts of health, illness, and the body, as well as to the development of medical theories and medical practice in the early modern era. Particular emphasis will be placed on the critical analysis of primary sources and relevant secondary literature. Active participation in class discussions is expected throughout the course.
Students will deepen their existing knowledge of the early modern period and broaden it through engagement with its social, cultural, and gender dimensions. They will develop skills in working with primary sources and secondary scholarship related to the history of medicine in this period, approached from a variety of methodological and interpretive perspectives. The knowledge and analytical skills acquired during the course will be applied in the preparation of seminar presentations and in active participation in seminar discussions. |
