Course content
Introduction into the philology and literature of the Latin Middle Ages. The course offers a survey of basic information on the field of Medieval Latin studies and its development, bibliographical and lexicological information. Attention is vowed to special features and the development of Medieval Latin and to a survey of Medieval European literature, with a focus on the lands of the Bohemian Crown. Reading and analysis of medieval Latin literary and diplomatic texts.

Learning outcomes
Introduction into medieval Latin philology and literature. The subject presents medieval Latin as a linguistic and cultural historical feature that proceeds without a break from late Antiquity and developed itself into the main way of cultural transmission in medieval Europe. During the course students are acquainted with basic information about Medieval Latin studies and its development, bibliographical and lexicological information. Special attention is given to the history of medieval Latin literature in the Middle Ages in Europe and in the lands of the Bohemian Crown. During the course the students will read and analyse a selection of medieval Latin literary and diplomatic texts.
The student will have a survey of the field of Latin Medieval Studies as well as of the basic primary and secondary literature. Knowledge of the development of medieval Latin as a linguistic phenomena from late Antiquity onwards. Ability to read and translate medieval texts.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Latin, fair average knowledge of classical literature (especially in late Antiquity) is recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

The student has basic knowledge of Latin Medieval Studies and its literature, as well as a survey of the development of Latin language from late Antiquity till high Middle Ages. (S)he is able to translate with the help of a dictionary medieval Latin texts and to understand its contents.
