Lecture topics: 1. Antiquity in the development of the script I. Capitals, uncial and half-uncial script. 2. Antiquity in the development of the script II. Older and younger Roman cursive. 3. Period of "national scripts" I. Scripts in Italy - Lombardian, Montecassino-benevet scripts and curial script. 4. Period of "national scripts" II. Merovingian and Visigoth scripts. 5. Period of "national scripts" III. Insular. 6. Period of Carolingian minuscule I. Development of book form of Carolingian minuscule. 7. Period of Carolingian minuscule II. Diplomatic and curial minuscule. 8. Period of Carolingian minuscule III. Carolingian minuscule in the Czech lands. 9. Period of Gothic scripts I. Classification and terminology of Gothic scripts. 10. Period of Gothic scripts II. Gothic scripts in Italy, France, England and German lands. 11. Period of Gothic scripts III. Classification and terminology of Gothic scripts in the Czech lands. 12. Period of Gothic scripts IV. Book script in the Czech lands in 13th-15th centuries. 13. Period of Gothic scripts V. Script of documents in the Czech lands in 13th-15th centuries. Seminars will focus on transliteration of Latin texts written in Carolingian minuscule and Gothic scripts and transliteration and transcription of Czech texts written in quick gothic scripts.

Learning outcomes |
Aim of the lectures is to introduce students to the development of Latin script in Antiquity and Middle Ages, also in the Czech lands. Students will be able to identify script examples based on specific characteristics - to identify type of script and its place in the development of Latin script and based on that to classify it in time and area. Aim of the seminar is to teach students to transliter more complicated texts written in Carolingian minuscule and other types of gothic scripts. In case of Czech texts transcription according to rules will be required.
Student is able to identify given examples of Latin script and to classify it within the development of script in chronological and geographical connections. Student is able to speak in wider context about a specific type and will be able to describe its characteristics, explanation of other connected issues (writing materials and tools, origins of Latin script, Roman and Arabic numbers, history of Latin alphabet, system of ligatures and symbols). Thanks to the seminars and homework student transliter simple texts written in Carolingian minuscule and in gothic scripts and also transcribe Czech medieval texts. |

Previous attendance on lectures and seminars Auxiliary Historical Disciplines 1. Advantage of knowledge or simultaneous study of Latin.

Oral exam, Student performance, Dialog, Seminar Work, Written exam
Attendance at least 90%. Written preparation for seminars in form of filling in online application. Written test (transliteration of Latin and transcription of Czech text). Oral exam (identification and commentary of three particular script examples, explanation of one theoretical question). |
