Course content |
Lecture topics: 1. Analytical-systematic method of teaching script in Early Modern Period. 2. Genesis of German neo-gothic in late Gothic Period, Renaissance and Baroque, 1500-1775. 3. Detailed description of model form of German neo-gothic cursive of Vienna´s normal school from 1775, abbreviations, punctuation, grammar, numbers, diacritics, general transcription rules. 4. From German neo-gothic typeface of Vienna´s normal school to modern current in 1775-1941. 5. Detailed description of model form of developed German neo-gothic script from the end of 19th century. 6. Reception and adaptation of humanistic script in the Czech lands in late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. 7. Detailed description of model form of humanistic cursive according the Czech models from 2nd half of 19th century, abbreviations, punctuation, grammar, numbers, diacritics. 8. Mutual influence of humanistic and neo-gothic typefaces. 9. Implementation of developed humanistic script in the Czech lands in Czech language texts from 2nd half of 19th century to the present. 10. Introduction to the problems of letterpress printing. 11. Principles of classification of typeface of press scripts in the areas of Latin cultural influence. 12. Connection between relevant types of handwritten scripts with historical typefaces of press scripts. 13. Genesis of typefaces of press scripts from 15th until 20th century. Seminars will focus on transliteration of German language texts and transliteration and transcription of Czech language texts written in relevant neo-gothic typefaces, their classification and palaeographical analysis.

Learning outcomes |
Aim of the lectures is to introduce students to the fundamental knowledge of different types of handwritten Latin scripts of neo-gothic and humanistic style which were used in the Czech lands and also in European context. Aim is also to give students knowledge about writing materials and orientation in palaeographical classification, in terminology for scripts and in the history of research. Main aim of the seminars is to teach students to read and transcribe texts written in Latin script from between 16th and beginning of 20th century, to identify and classify time period of script of those texts with palaeographical methods.
Student will know the terminology and history of the field, understands the influence of writing materials and techniques on final form of the script. Student is able to explain development of Latin script in Early Modern Period and also in 19th and 20th centuries, including incisions of press scripts, numbers, ligatures and abbreviations. Student is able to recognize fundamental scripts of neo-gothic and humanistic styles with help of palaeographical classification and analysis, can explain their basic differences and can identify correct time period. Thanks to seminars and homework student should be to deepen his or hers knowledge of reading and transcribing of early modern texts in following seminars. |

Completion of Early Modern Palaeography 1. No more requirements. Advantage of knowledge of simultaneous study of German.

Seminar attendance at least 85%, written preparation for the seminar in the form of palaeographical transcription of texts given, written test (palaeographical transcription of German or Czech text), oral exam (answer to chosen answer, reading of the text, palaeographical classification and analysis of other texts). |
