Course content |
Lecture topics: 1. Review of general terminology for description of written Latin script and terminology of fundamental kinds and forms of Latin script from Antiquity and Middle Ages. 2. Definition of the field and history of research in early modern Latin palaeography as discipline within Latin palaeography as Auxiliary Historical Discipline. 3. Literature, edition and handbooks in early modern Latin palaeography. 4. Methodological issues of early modern Latin script studies. 5. Specifics of description of Latin script in Early Modern Period, specific kinds and styles of the script. 6. Principles of classification of early modern Latin script with use of morphological, genetic and model analysis of the script. 7. Writing materials in Early Modern Period in connection to early modern script (especially paper, inks, pens, pencils). 8. Detailed description of model form of Czech neo-gothic cursive script from 1st half of the 16th century, abbreviations, grammar, punctuation, diacritics, numbers, ligatures, general transcription rule. 9. Changes of Czech neo-gothic script, 1500-1775. 10. Infiltration of characteristics from German neo-gothic script into Czech neo-gothic script. 11. Genesis of neo-gothic script in Italy, France and England. 12. Nürmberg scriptorium and first printed scribe textbooks 13. Detailed description of model form of German neo-gothic cursive from half of the 16th century, abbreviations, punctuation, diacritics, numbers, ligatures. Seminars will focus on transliteration of German language texts and transliteration and transcription of Czech language texts written in relevant neo-gothic typefaces, their classification and palaeographical analysis.

Learning outcomes |
Main aim of the lectures is to introduce students with the fundamental knowledge about different types of handwritten Latin scripts of neo-gothic and humanistic style which were used in the Czech lands and also in European context. Aim is also to give students knowledge about writing materials and orientation in palaeographical classification, in terminology for typefaces and in the history of research. Main aim of the seminars is to teach students to read and rewrite texts written in Latin script, originally from Early Modern Period, identify the typeface and time period of those texts with correct palaeographical methods.
Student will know the terminology and history of the field, understands the influence of writing materials and techniques on final form of the typeface. Student is able to explain development of neo-gothic typeface of Latin cultural area including numbers, ligatures and abbreviations. Is able to recognize fundamental kinds of typefaces of neo-gothic and humanistic style using methods of paleographical classification and analysis, is able to explain differences and can identify time period. Student is able to continue in the studies of following Early Modern Paleography 2. Thanks to seminars and homework student should be to deepen his or hers knowledge of reading and transcribing of early modern texts. |

Seminar attendance at least 85%, written preparation for the seminar in the form of palaeographical transcription of texts given, written test (palaeographical transcription of German or Czech text). |
