Course content
|
Topic of lectures and seminars: 1. Introduction to literature about history of municipal administration in the Czech lands, editions. 2. Origins of municipal administration before 1419. 3. Origins of municipal diplomatics, first offices, period of deeds. 4. Character of municipal administration during Hussite period until 1547. 5. Municipal administration until half of 18th century, codification of municipal law. 6. Municipal (city) books, their reading and characteristics. 7. Municipal administration during the Enlightenment until 1848. 8. Diplomatics of cities during period of superiority of record material. 9. Summary of history of municipal justice. 10. Special groups of residents in cities and their position in the system of municipal law and administration. 11. Documents of universities, Jews and other residents outside the system of municipal law. 12. Introduction to principles of methodology for organization of archive funds of cities. 13. Excursion in the archive over diplomatic material of city archive.

Learning outcomes
|
Aim is to introduce students to the history of municipal administration in the Czech lands since its origins until 19th century. It will include not only questions of people living under municipal law, but also special groups of residents in cities and their position in the system of municipal law and administration. Attention will be paid to documents of municipal offices and their products in different time periods. Municipal administration will be introduced from archivist point of view, but also in context of other particular administrations and in connection with state administration in relevant time periods.
Student will know the development of municipal administration from its origins until 1848, will have an overview of diplomatic material of cities. Students is able to use this knowledge when working with particular archive material - diplomatic analysis of administrative book.

Prerequisites
|
Basic knowledge of history of the Czech lands. Advantage of completion of other courses focusing on the history of administration.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Student performance, Seminar Work
Attendance at least 80%. Credits will be given based on active participation during the seminar and for diplomatic analysis of a municipal office book. Oral exam.
