Course content
1.Codicology as Auxiliary Historical Discipline, its origins and object of interest. Literary manuscript. Codicological institutions in ČR, magazine Studie o rukopisech, biggest manuscript collections in ČR. Internal and external characteristics of manuscript. 2. External characteristics of manuscript - binding (parts, technique). Different types of binding based on age (specifics of Gothic binding), different bindings based on coverage. Description of binding on given examples. 3. External characteristics of manuscript - types of script. Notations. Identification of script and notation on given examples. 4. External characteristics of manuscript - decorations of the book (illustration, illumination, introduction to graphic techniques, general sorting). Identification of illustration, illumination and graphic techniques on given examples. 5. Internal characteristics of manuscript - division of books according to content,, book title, incipit, explicit, colophon and imprint. Bible and its translations, notes and dictionaries, issue of deuterocanonic books and apocryfs. Czech translations of Bible. Looking for terms in Bible dictionary and identification if citation in concordance. 6. Internal characteristics of manuscript - liturgy books (missal, breviary, ordinals). Codex iuris civilis, Codex iuris canonici. Identification of fragments of liturgical books. 7.+8. Principles of manuscript description, structure of manuscript listings. Interpretation of different manuscript descriptions. 9. Genealogy as Auxiliary Historical Discipline, its origin and object of interest. Terminology and symbols used in genealogy. 10. Ahnentafel and how to create it, loss and transfer of descendants, numbering of persons in anhentafel, practical use in the past. 11. Family tree of lineage and direct line and how to create it, loss and transfer of descendants, numbering of persons. Examples of practical use. Cognate-consanguine tables. 12. Primary sources for genealogy research. Development and content of registry books. 13. Practical work with examples of registry book records from different time periods.

Learning outcomes
Aim of the course is to introduce students to codicology and genealogy, literature and terminology. Codicology seminars will focus on the understanding of the students to description of particular manuscript and to interpret it correctly. Students will also become familiar with Bible and other liturgy books, bindings and graphic techniques, history of historical funds of Czech and Moravian libraries. Genealogy seminar will focus on fundamental kinds of outputs of genealogy research, principles of their creation and possibilities of their use. Students will also become familiar with main primary sources in genealogy, especially register books (including their historical development).
Codicology part of the seminar will provide student with understanding to principles of manuscript description. Genealogy part of the seminar will provide student with knowledge of terminology, symbols and principles in genealogy.

Student performance, Written exam

Attendance at least 90%. Written test (interpretation of manuscript description, creation of family tree, test of main terminology).
