Course content |
Seminars will focus on selected fields in the Greek society (historiography, democracy and tyranny, totalitarianism, otherness, religion and mythology, everyday life) and their afterlife via analysis of primary sources (works of ancient authors) and chapters from modern publications and articles connected to the topics of the seminars. The programme will be presented during the first session and accessible via Moodle. Readings for seminars (primary sources/secondary literature) as well as other resources will be also at Moodle. A preliminary program: 1) Introduction to the syllabus + tips for scholarly reading and note-taking 2) Introduction to primary sources, literature, reference works, online tools + paraphrasing 3) How to write history? The Greek historiography 4) Mythos as a fundament of thinking about the world, how to work with myths 5) Athenian democracy: the best or worst? Pericles, Funeral oration, its rhetoric and second life 6) Sparta mirage 7) Creating barbarian, us vs. them 8) Hellenism 9) Household, family, everyday life 10) Gods, semi-gods, cults, sport, and mysteries 11) Test 12) Greek and Roman wedding

Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Written exam
