Course content
The course concentrates on the papacy in medieval Europe, especially the beginnings of the papal primate, strengthening of the position of the pope in the ecclesiastical framework as well as state (and secular) milieu. The influence of the papacy on cultural and political happenings is analysed; especially the political theories, conciliarism and papalism, international politics, influence of the church and church politics of individual states, cultural and social influence on Europe, includin the "Renaissance papacy", which ends the course in chronoligical framework. The situation of Central Europe is analysed from the ninth century onwards. A part of the course is run in the archive, where the students get to know the papal charters preserved there.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is the elucidate the papal history of the Middle Ages including the individual milestones of papal politics as well as the church and spiritual life.
The students will gain basic knowledge of the papal history, but also church and spriritual history in general, they should understand the problems of Chruch authority and they will understand the basics of papal diplomacy and diplomatics.
Prerequisites
The studnets have to know the general history of the Middle Ages and understand the basic terminology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Essay

Active participation in the classes, required reading, discussion, short essay, colloquium.
