Course content
Selected chapters from the history of Czechoslovakia. 1. Introduction Czechoslovakia in post-war Europe 2. National Cleansing, Retribution against Nazi criminals and collaborators. The issue of post-war settlement. The Road to "Czech Retribution", Extraordinary People's Courts, specifics of Czech Retribution. 3. Construction of repressive apparatus and consolidation of communist power before 1948. Importance and activity of Defense Intelligence Service. The personality of Bedřich Reicin. Catholic Church in Communist Czechoslovakia 4. Persecution of the Catholic Church 1945-1960. Ideological bases, the first attacks during the years 1945-1948, the beginning of persecution, the hardest phase of persecution - Catholic Actions, the Číhošť miracle, the internment of the episcopate. 5. The Catholic Church during the years 1960-1989. Restoration of Czechoslovakia's communication with the Vatican. "Peace movement of Catholic clergy", The Prague Spring and the second wave of arrests and persecutions, underground church and its importance in the third resistance. Czechoslovakian penitentiary system in the two totalitarian periods 6. Nazi prison service - prison service as part of the Nazi repressive apparatus. Three probes - the Pankrác Prison, the Mírov Prison, the Waldheim Prison. 7. Prison system in the era of Communism. Influence of Sovietization - prison and camp system, specifics of prison society in non-democratic states, women in communist prisons, culture and daily life in prisons. 8. Excursion to the prison in Uherské Hradiště. Sudetenland and their importance for modern Czechoslovak history 9. Czech-German relations until 1938 - roots of conflicts. 10. Borderland became Sudetengau (1938-1945.) 11. The post-war fate of the Czech borderland. The expulsion of Germans and subsequent settlement. Economic and social development. Symbiosis and conflicts. Historiography 12. Today's disputes over history. Memory study. Working with sources, working with text. 13. Final lecture.

Learning outcomes
The course is taught by PhD students specialized on the 20th century. It is not opened every academic year. Graduates of the course will gain a basic overview of selected aspects of Czechoslovak history. The course will be divided into several thematic units in which individual topics will be discussed within a certain time span. In particular, an emphasis will be placed on analysis of literature, as well as presentation skills of students.
Good orientation in the topic and an opportunity to use acquired knowledge in own work.
Prerequisites
Basic orientation in Czechoslovak and general history of 20th century on grammar school level.

Assessment methods and criteria
Dialog, Seminar Work

Participation in the course (max. 2 lectures absence allowed), presentation of a paper on a given topic.
