Learning outcomes
The seminar is a basic overview of the issue of Czech emigration to the American continent, which had an individual character from the 17th century and a mass character from 1848. It will be presented not only the difficulties that accompanied emigrants when processing permits or on the way, but also during their settlement in a new country. Emphasis will also be placed on the historical development and current situation of the Czech colony in important areas such as Texas, Chicago or New York. Each territory has its peculiarities. At the very end, the situation of emigrants in the United States and other countries of the region such as Canada, Argentina, Brazil or Mexico will be compared.
After completing the course, students should get a basic idea of the migration process between the Czech lands and the American continent. They should be oriented not only in trends and routes, but also gain an overview of the social status of their compatriots across the ocean. Their lives will be approached from different angles: political activity, identity and assimilation, language, literature, publishing, religion, society, traditions and customs. The students should then apply this theoretical knowledge when writing encyclopedic entries about the expatriate community and thus create an overview map of Czech emigration across the ocean.
Prerequisites
Students are supposed to have basic factual knowledge of the 19th-century history.
