Course content
Ties between History and Literature. Interpretation of early modern and modern fiction in current historiography - Early Modern Utopian Literature - Early Modern Chronicles - Theater Plays - Adventure 19th century books - Barocque Fiction - National Awakening and National novel - Antisemitism - Colonialism

Learning outcomes
No literary text exists out of context. On the contrary, fiction is always written within cultural, social, religious or ideological context. The seminar aims at contextual reading of fiction which makes possible for students to analyze literarature within a wider framework of politics, religion and culture. The seminar will cover a variety of texts from the 16th to 20th century. The selected monuments of European literature will serve as primary archival sources. Active participation of students in the discussions is expected. Most seminars will be held on campus. 1-2 seminars may be held online.
The students understand basic concepts and methods of literary theory and they know how to apply them within the text analysis. They also understand the characteristics and specifics of chosen literary genres and singular texts. They are able to assess them critically regarding to their interpretative value. They dispose of an overview of the relevant secondary literature of both Czech and foreign origin.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of early modern and modern history.
