Course content |
Aim of this week-long seminar is to introduce premises of premonstrate monastery of Teplá (or other historical building) from three points of view - as a monastic house where lives, prays and works a community of monks, as a work of art and as a historic building which gained its current shape over nine centuries. Four groups will, together with lectors, think about individual buildings and spaces of the canony and its wider facilities and will present their findings in a form of a short presentation to members of other groups. Meeting in June of relevant year (8 hours) at the Department of History: lecture about the history of canony in Teplá, seminar focused on taking photographs of monuments and creation of presentations. Week-long visit in Teplá monastery: Day 1: Familiarization with the monastery and the area, lecture by invited guest. Days 2-5: Work in groups under the guidance of lectors and presentation of gained knowledge to members of other groups, lectures of invited guests in the evening. Day 6: Field trip to sites connected to canony in Teplá (pilgrimage sites, liege small towns, farms and Mariánské Lázně, consultations and working on individual presentations). Day 7: Final conference.

Learning outcomes |
Main aim is to introduce students to historic building as a very interesting primary source and to show it on the examples of presentations of various experts and options of interpretation of building as such and also its different parts. Seminar are usually attended by historian, historian of buildings, archivist and art historian. In case of premonstrate canony of Teplá students will be introduced with history and functional organization of house, technique of its construction and how it was equipped with pieces of art. Monastery will be introduced also as a building task, work of art and a space where monks lived and still live.
Student will gain knowledge in not very frequented fields of study - monasteriology, liturgy of Catholic church, Christian iconography and will be familiar with terms used in history of arts and in construction reconnaissance. Student will work under time pressure and will have to work with other students, will practice ability to make sketches, to take photographs and to adjust them, to create presentations and to present findings. |
