Course content
This course introduces students to the history of medieval warfare in both East and West from the end of the Roman Empire to the late fifteenth century. Using both primary sources and modern scholarship, the course examines how medieval war was fought and why it mattered, covering strategy and tactics, military organization and combatants (from raiders to knights and crusaders), fortifications and technology, diplomacy, and the influence of religion. Equal attention is given to war's broader consequences, including its effects on civilians and on medieval social, political, and economic life. Alongside building a coherent foundation in medieval military history, students will develop core historical skills like close reading and analysis of sources.
