Learning outcomes
The course focuses on reading, translation, and analysis of the Renaissance tractise De veritate religionis Christianae (On the thruth of Christian religion) of the important Dutch philosopher Hugo Grotius. Next to the discussed text of the tractise the students will read also other texts of Grotius (letters, theatre, ...) as well as renaissance texts of other authors. The aim of the course is to let the students make acquaintance with one of the most widely read renaissance texts and to give an insight into the renaissance debate on the co-existence of the churches. The subject is a result of the ESF Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness, reg. no. CZ 1.07/2.3.00/20.0026.
After absolving the course the students will have a fair knowledge of Renaissance Latin literature and an average ability to read and translate a Renaissance Latin text. The lecture of theological and philosophical texts will give to the students an insight into the way of thinking of the late Renaissance and into the cohabitation of protestant churches in early modern times.
