Course content |
1. Introduction to the study of the subject, types of sources and terminology. 2. Money in prehistory and antiquity - premonetary period. 3. The beginnings of minted coins and coinage of ancient Greece. 4. Coinage of ancient Rome. 5. Coinage of the Byzantine Empire and the migration of peoples. 6. Coinage of early medieval Europe. 7. Coinage of early medieval Bohemia and Moravia. 8. Bracteates in Central Europe (12th-13th centuries). 9. The phenomenon of the Prague groschen (1300-1547). 10. High and late medieval gold coins in Western and Central Europe (13th-15th centuries). 11. Tolar currency in Europe (16th-18th centuries). 12. The first credit currency - banknotes and coins from base metals (17th-19th centuries). 13. Monetary systems of the modern world.

Learning outcomes |
The course will focus on the issue of the history of money from ancient times to the 20th century, with a special focus on the ancient and medieval periods. The aim of the course is to familiarize the listeners with all the basic aspects of money, both from the point of view of their function and external physical appearance. It will therefore be a confrontation of historical, archaeological and above all numismatic knowledge. Model examples will be selected for each historical section, and the given period will be presented through them. Considerable attention will also be paid to coin finds, which represent one of the basic pillars of knowledge of monetary development. The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the issue in such a way that they are able to perceive the role of money and monetary systems within individual historical sections.
