Course content
The course focuses on reading and analysis of Medieval and Renaissance Latin texts from different genres. The texts are chronologically and thematically arranged in order to give to the students a survey of the development of Medieval Latin prose and to present this prose in its continuity versus European civilisation. Mostly prosaic texts have been selected but a certain amount of spiritual and secular poetry will be presented as well as its formal analysis. In the case of spiritual texts biblical and christian motives will be analysed as well. The students are lead to make their own interpretation and translation of the texts.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on reading and analysis of Medieval and Renaissance Latin texts from different genres. The texts are chronologically and thematically arranged in order to give to the students a survey of the development of Medieval Latin prose and to present this prose in its continuity versus European civilisation. Mostly prosaic texts have been selected but a certain amount of spiritual and secular poetry will be presented as well as its formal analysis. In the case of spiritual texts biblical and christian motives will be analysed as well. The students are lead to make their own interpretation and translation of the texts. The subject is innovated within the ESF project Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness reg. no. CZ 1.07/2.3.00/20.0026.
After absolving the course the students will have a fair knowledge of Renaissance Latin literature and an average ability to read and translate a Renaissance Latin text. The lecture of theological and philosophical texts will give to the students an insight into the way of thinking of the late Renaissance and into the cohabitation of protestant churches in early modern times.
Prerequisites
Average knowledge of Latin, at least at the bachelor's level (after finishing the first year).
