Course content
This course explores the history of the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantium) from the times of Justinian the Great until the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. It will focus on political events, social phenomena, and cultural developments that shaped the early, middle, and late periods of the empire. We will look at the conflicts with the Arab Muslims, the Crusades, and the wars with the Ottomans. We will consider questions of Roman political traditions and reform. In the attempt to understand the Byzantine civilization, students will also get acquainted with how Christianity and the Church influenced the operations of the empire. Furthermore, we will discuss the most important primary sources as well as the Byzantine structures and ideas which are still relevant in the modern days.

Learning outcomes
1. To acquire an understanding of the main events and social-political phenomena of the Byzantine Empire (6th century AD- 15th century AD). 2. To critically use the textual and non-textual major primary sources discussing the history of the Byzantine Empire.
1. To articulate an original, complex argument with highly effective critical analysis. 2. To integrate, and discuss primary source evidence effectively, based on an understanding of the methods of historical research and analysis.
