Course content
1. Introduction to Paleolithic archeology - basic terminology, scientific approaches and paradigms, overview of current (interdisciplinary) research methods. 2. Paleoecology - stratigraphic classification of Quaternary period, climatic and environmental evolution in Eurasia and Africa, climatic cycles, types of Quaternary sediments, the Pleistocene fauna and flora. 3. Overview of the cultural development in Paleolithic and Mesolithic of Europe and adjacent areas in Asia and Africa - basic characteristics of archaeological cultures from viewpoint of chronology, geographical expansion, material culture, economical and social aspects (settlement and hunting strategies, exploitation of natural resources, sites structure, art, burials). 4. Lower Paleolithic of Africa and Eurasia - the oldest stone industries in Africa, migration of early hominids to Eurasia and beginning of the Paleolithic settlement of Europe. 5. Middle Paleolithic - Neanderthals and their adaptation in Eurasia, Mousterien and Micoquien in Europe. 6. - 7. Early Upper Paleolithic - Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition, transitional lithic industries, migration and adaptation of anatomically modern humans in Eurasia, modern humans vs. last Neanderthals. 8. Gravettian as complex hunter-gatherer society - problems of origin, chronology and the end. 9. - 10. Europe after the Last Glacial Maximum - disintegration of cultural development and problems of epi-cultures, Magdalenian and main cultures of Late Paleolithic period. 11. - 13. Mesolithic and adaptation of humans to Holocene environment - changes in hunter-gatherer society, main cultural techno-complexes, problems of Neolithisation in Europe.

Learning outcomes
Lectures will introduce students to current trends and "top" topics of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic study in European and worldwide context from viewpoint of archeology, paleoanthropology, paleontology and paleoecology.
Orientation in the studied issues, the ability to interpret the cultural evolution of Paleolithic and Mesolithic in broader context, critically evaluate individual scientific hypotheses and approaches, overview of the current literature to the given issue.
Prerequisites
Basic orientation in the Central European Paleolithic and Mesolithic (chronology, cultural development, material culture) at the level of Bachelor's degree.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Attendance in classes, including excursions (52 hours = 2 credits); study of informational sources (52 hours = 2 credits); preparation on colloquium (25 hours = 1 credit).
