Course content
|
Lectures: 1) Introduction to the study of stone industries and the history of research 2) Lithics in prehistory (overview from the Palaeolithic to the Eneolithic) 3) How to recognize lithics (raw materials, quarries) 4) How to recognise lithics (basic characteristics) 5-6) Type-technological analysis of lithics, chipping techniques and production chain (I) 7-8) Type-technological analysis of lithics, chipping techniques and production chain (II) 9) What the lithics tell us 10) How to analyse an assemblage of lithics (methodology of work) 11-12) An overview of the development of the polished stone industry (Paleolithic to Eneolithic) 13-14) Basics of documentation (classical and digital drawing, photographic illustration) Seminars and practices: The practice of methods of sorting assemblages of lithics and polished stone industry according to technical, technological and typological parameters. Continuous evaluations.

Learning outcomes
|
The main target is to familiarize students with stone artefacts (lithics and polished stone industry). Lithics: terminology, techniques of stone knapping, typology, description, overview of lithics' development, principles of paint, and other types of documentation. Polished stone industry: terminology, the raw spectrum, manufacturing process, morpho-typology, and an overview of the polished stone industry's development.
Practical knowledge of description, dating and determination of the stone industry, and drawing documentation.

|
Basic orientation in archaeological cultures in Central Europe.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam
(1) Participation in class: 39 hours = 1.5 credits; (2) completion of continuous evaluations: 13 hours = 0.5 credits; (3) colloquium preparation: 25 hours = 1 credit.
