WORD AND IMAGE IN EARLY MODERN CULTURE Early modern period (sixteenth through eighteenth century) was the period of profound transformations. While at the beginning of this period we see Europe in many respects still mostly "medieval", at the end of the period we can find many elements that defined the "modern" world (individual human rights, constitutional systems, rationalism and science, technological progress, but also colonial expansion). Early modern period also brought dramatic changes in the ways people created, shared, and consumed texts and pictures. Believing that those texts and images are keys to the understanding of the development of the European civilisation, the seminar will aim at exploring and discussing the whole range of issues: the invention and impact of the printing press, storytelling, emergence of the visual propaganda for the Reformation, iconoclasm, cult of saints, self-presentation of the kings, or rituals and ceremonies.
Students will gain knowledge of selected topics of this period and they will be also familiar with the literature related to this course.
