The seminar "Literatur der Sattelzeit" will introduce students to the fundamentals of literature, as well as history and art, in German-speaking countries during the period from approximately 1770 to 1830a time that was fundamentally shaped by the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Restoration. A key figure (not only) in the literary life of this era was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), who played an important role in both the Sturm und Drang period and Weimar Classicism and Romanticism. Course Structure: 1. The Concept of "Sattelzeit" 2. Historical and Cultural Context 3. Periodization; Literary Epochs within the Sattelzeit 4. The Late Enlightenment 5. Sturm und DrangDrama; Poetry; "Genius" as a Central Concept 6. Weimar ClassicismAntiquity as a Model (J.J. Winckelmann); anthropology; drama; poetry 7. Romanticismphases; philosophical foundations (Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel); art and religion; the novel; fairy tales 8. Goethe as a Key Figure of the Era All the texts and assignments analysed, together with other supporting materials, are available on the Moodle LMS. .

The seminar "Literatur der Sattelzeit" will introduce students to the fundamentals of literature, as well as history and art, in German-speaking countries during the period from approximately 1770 to 1830a time that was fundamentally shaped by the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Restoration. A key figure (not only) in the literary life of this period was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), who played an important role in both the Sturm und Drang era and Weimar Classicism and Romanticism. The seminar will focus on both primary texts and key works of secondary literature. Students will practice and deepen their ability to analyze literary texts, while also gaining essential knowledge of the history, key figures, and literary life of this period. .
Analysis of complex literary texts from the period 1770-1830 within their contemporary political, social, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts; deepening of knowledge of the periods of German literature from the Enlightenment to Romanticism; discussion of the themes of the analyzed texts; presentation of the analysis in both written and oral form.

Prerequisites
|
Intended for bachelor's degree students; a minimum proficiency in German at the B1 level is required. It is recommended that students have previously completed the course "Introduction to Literary Studies" (KGN/1ULT) and Einführung in die Geschichte der dt. Literatur 1 a 2 (KGN/1EP1; KGN/1EP2)..

Essay, Student performance, Dialog
Active participation in the seminar, no more than 2 absences, completion and submission of homework assignments, and a final discussion of the analyzed texts.
