The course is divided into three thematic blocks: 1) Urban Geography as a discipline a. The city as a complex and comprehensive subject of study b. A brief development of cities c. Development of urban geography, relationship with other disciplines, urban studies 2) Selected concepts, approaches used in urban geography a. Planetary urbanization b. "Global" versus "Ordinary" city c. The (Post)Socialist City 3) Selected processes and phenomena of urban geography a. The city and technology b. The city and inequality c. The city and "nature" d. The city from below Note: the content of blocks 2 and 3 may be modified according to current needs and situations

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic overview of the development and present-day urban geography, with an emphasis on demonstrating the diversity of theories and concepts used in contemporary urban studies and on selected current processes and phenomena taking place in (Czech) cities. The seminar will emphasize a discussion of the pros and cons of the various theoretical approaches used in urban geography and a critical evaluation of the ambivalent processes taking place in urban space
After completing the course, the student will be able to discuss current topics in urban geography, both in terms of basic theoretical and conceptual approaches and in terms of "real" processes taking place in (Czech) cities.
