Course content
Geological evolution of the Earth's lithosphere and its manifestations. Short-term and long-term events and their influence on the Earth's surface. Geological catastrophes and anthropocentric approach to them. Endogenic and exogenic processes and an overview of significant catastrophic events in the Earth's history - their causes, consequences and impacts. Existing potential risks on the territory of the Czech Republic. The second part of the course will encompass the main global extinctions in the geological history. The Cambrian explosion of life, big biotic crisis at the end of the Ordovician, extinction at the end of the Devonian (the Frasnian / Famennian boundary), extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. Each extinction event is characterised by the affected groups of organisms and by possible causes and consequences.

Learning outcomes
Endogenic and exogenic processes and an overview of significant catastrophic events in the Earth's history - their causes, consequences and impacts.
The student should be able to: - describe the geological evolution of the Earth's lithosphere and its manifestations. - classify short-term and long-term events and define their influence on the Earth's surface. - reason the anthropocentric approach to geological catastrophes them. - explain the causes, consequences and impacts of endogenic and exogenic processes leading to catastrophic events in the Earth's history - define existing potential risks on the territory of the Czech Republic. - describe and explain the main global extinctions in the geological history (big biotic crisis at the end of the Ordovician, extinction at the end of the Devonian, extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. - characterised each extinction event by the affected groups of organisms and by possible causes and consequences.
Prerequisites
Expanding knowledge of general geology and systematical paleontology .

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Entry prerequisites: fundamental knowledge of mineralogy, petrography, general geology, desirably palaeontology. Colloquium: knowledge of discussed anomalous Endogenic and exogenic geological processes and big extinction events in the geological history of the Earth.
