Learning outcomes
The seminar will analyze in detail Francis Bacon's New Atlantis, one of the utopian works of Renaissance political philosophy. The New Atlantis will be put first into the context of Renaissance thought, then Bacon's work, and finally specifically into the context of Renaissance political philosophy of both the utopian line (Thomas More, Johann Valentin Andreae, Francis Bacon, Jan Amos Comenius) and of different conceptions (Niccolo Machiavelli, Jean Bodin). The starting point for your own reading will be the Czech translation by Alois Bejblík (Prague: Mladá Fronta 1980). The translation will be compared with the critical edition of the text (ed. Brian Vickers, Oxford - New York 1996). The commentary will draw on extensive secondary literature and existing commentaries on the Vickers edition, which will contribute to a deeper understanding of the text. The ideal outcome of the seminar will be a revision of the translation for a new edition of the New Atlantis in Czech.
