Francis Bacon - New Atlantis 2 - Predecessors and Heirs Commented reading of Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun This seminar follows on from the seminar Francis Bacon - New Atlantis (KFI/BCSF2), but prior completion of that seminar is not a prerequisite. The seminar will analyze in detail Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun, which preceded Francis Bacon's New Atlantis, but whose second Latin edition was published after the first edition of New Atlantis. The aim is to compare Campanella's utopian text with Bacon's, identifying common features and fundamental differences. The starting point for the reading will be the Czech translation by Maxmilián Ryšánek (Prague: Leichter 1934). The translation will be compared with the critical Italian-Latin edition of the work (La citta del sole / Civitas solis, Torino: Aragno 2008) as well as with the English translation (Daniel J. Donno) and German translations (I. E. Wessely, J. Ferner). The commentary will be based on extensive secondary literature and existing commentaries on individual editions, which will contribute to a deeper understanding of the text. The seminar will take place in blocks on 9 to 11 April 2026, in the form of a retreat, which requires participants to stay at the venue for at least one night (from 10 to 11 April). The seminar will take place in the Jeseníky Mountains, in Velké Losiny. Meals are not included. I will contact those registered for the seminar with detailed instructions for the stay.
