The seminar will analyze in detail the writing of Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun, one of the utopian works of Renaissance political philosophy. The City of the Sun will first be set in the context of Renaissance thought, then Campanella's work, his natural philosophy and metaphysics, and finally, specifically in the context of Renaissance political philosophy of both the utopian line (Thomas More, Johann Valentin Andreae, Francis Bacon, Jan Amos Comenius) and divergent conceptions (Niccolo Machiavelli, Jean Bodin). The Czech translation by Maxmilián Ryšánek (Praha: Leichter 1934) will be the starting point for the actual reading.
