Learning outcomes
The course "Theory and History of Syllogism" introduces students to the basic concepts and topics of the most traditional form of argument in the history of logic and familiarises them with key issues and specific topics in the theory of syllogism. Attention is devoted both to the formal analysis of syllogistic judgments (figures, modes, validity rules, questions of reduction and interpretation) and to selected systematic debates on various aspects of the theory of syllogism. The course also offers a concise yet contextualised overview of the history of syllogism from antiquity through the transformation of logic in the 19th century. The aim is to provide students with a solid conceptual foundation, historical orientation, and the ability to independently analyse and evaluate syllogistic arguments.
