Learning outcomes
The course traces the development of Greek thought from its Milesian beginnings to the emergence of Neoplatonism (Plotinus). To provide students with the most authentic understanding of Greek thought, a large part of the instruction is designed as a commentary on key texts. The seminars emphasize working with secondary literature and mapping scholarly debates. The tutorials provide a basic knowledge of Ancient Greek. In addition, the tutorials are designed as an introduction to (Greek) philosophy, explaining fundamental philosophical concepts and ideas. At the same time, students will acquire basic linguistic knowledge. Credit is awarded based on active participation in the seminars and written tests from the Greek terminology tutorials. The exam is in the form of a test.
