Course content
The attention is paid to the thermodynamic description of electrolyte solutions, and especially to the problems of activity and its measurements and to questions of transport processes. Majority of lectures is devoted to the description of electrode processes and electrochemical methods used especially in practice, research, and analytical applications. The following part of the lectures is aimed on the existence of membrane potentials and their usage in practise. The student are also introduced into the problematic of photoeletrochemical processes. Activity and activity coefficient. Diffusion and migration in solutions of electrolytes, measurements of diffuse coefficient. Electrochemical processes in heterogeneous systems, electrodes and electrode potential. Electrode kinetics - Butler - Volmer equation, Tafel equation. The influence of transport processes on the electrode process, reversibility of the electrode process. Experimental methods of electrode kinetics. Survey of basic principles of methods. Adjustment and conditions of electrochemical experiment. Potentiostatic methods of electrode reactions. Cyclic voltametry. Photoelectrochemistry. Potentials of liquid boundary. Ion-selective electrodes and biological membranes.
