Course content
A general description of colloidal systems, their definition, characteristics, preparation and stability. Molecular-kinetic properties of colloidal systems-Brownian motion, diffusion, osmosis. Sedimentation analysis, use of osmosis when purifying and analysing macromolecular substances. Optical properties of colloidal systems-light diffusion-static and dynamic light scattering. Diffusion-based methods. Microscopic methods of studying colloidal systems. Electrokinetic phenomena-electrokinetic potential and its measuring, capillary effects. Electrophoresis and electroosmosis, influence of electric properties on the stability of colloids. Reology of colloidal systems, viscosity and use of viscosity measurements for studying colloids. Surface tension and its measuring. Surface active compounds in colloid chemistry, flotation. Use of the colloids and their specific properties in industry and research.
