Course content
On the grounds of a detailed analysis of the surface energy, surface processes and their practical applications are described, includding principal measurement methods. Very important part of the course deals with the issues of adsorption and surface active substances. Another part deals with the principles of the production and growth of a new phase and heterogeneous reaction kinetics. The final part deals with the application of the acquired knowledge to a description of the production and physical-chemical properties of colloidal systems. Surface energy and intermolecular interaction in condensed phase. The impact of the surface curvature on the equilibrium of one-component system. Determination methods for surface energy. Thermodynamics of adsorption-Gibbs equation, structure and properties of adsorption layers. Adsorption on the solid phase surface, BET isotherm, mercury porosimetry. Surface energy of three-component system, wettability. Classification of surface active surfactants and their use in the control of a wetting process . Homogenous and heterogeneous nucleation, kinetics of new phase nuclei production. Basic kinetics of heterogeneous reactions. Thermodynamics of micellar production, solubilisation. Production and stability of colloidal systems. Molecular kinetic, optical, electrical and rheological properties of colloids.
