Course content
Annotation: Aim of the course is to provide knowledge base and practice base for students for understanding how to design respiratory physiotherapy treatment plans for patients with breathing disorders and how to assess patients with breathing disorders. Topics for seminars: 1. Introduction to breathing disorders. 2. Anatomy and physiology of pulmonary system. 3. Breathing function in health and disease. 4. Assessment of breathing. 5. Chest physiotherapy. 6. Patient's breathing problems, physiotherapy management and outcome measures - stable phase of diseases: infants and children. 7. Patient's breathing problems, physiotherapy management and outcome measures - acute phase of diseases: infants and children. 8. Patient's breathing problems, physiotherapy management and outcome measures - stable phase of diseases: adults and elderly. 9. Patient's breathing problems, physiotherapy management and outcome measures - acute phase of diseases: adults and elderly. 10. Chest physiotherapy in intensive care unit. 11. Chest physiotherapy - inpatient rehabilitation. 12. Chest physiotherapy - outpatient rehabilitation. 13. Oxygen therapy. 14. Relaxation. Topics for practical lectures: 1. Chest shapes and dimensions. 2. Chest movement measurements. 3. Breathing control. 4. Breathing exercises. 5. Neurophysiological facilitation of breathing. 6. Chest mobilisation exercises. 7. Airway clearance techniques. 8. Shaking. 9. Vibrations. 10. Manual hyperinflation. 11. CoughAssist machine. 12. Incentive spirometry. 13. Respiratory muscle training. 14. Non-invasive ventilation. 15. Manual therapy techniques (assessment of posture, range of motion, muscle assessment and techniques).

Objectives: The students will be able to choose and use correct techniques of chest physiotherapy for treating breathing problems. They will be able to discuss about the pathology of disease, medical management, physiotherapy and they will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
