Course content
|
1. The geriatric patient and the issues of ageing. Ageing and involutional changes, frailty, polymorbidity and polypharmacy. Geriatric modification of the clinical presentation of diseases in older age. Specific aspects of care and communication with geriatric patients. 2. Clinical examination of the geriatric patient. Specific aspects of clinical and functional assessment, evaluation of functional status and independence, questionnaires and assessment tools used in geriatrics. 3. Geriatric deterioration, frailty and disability. Geriatric syndromes. 4. Syndrome of hypomobility, deconditioning and muscle weakness. Syndrome of instability and falls. 5. Immobility syndrome and its consequences. 6. Cognitive impairment syndrome, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Palliative and end-of-life care.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issues of ageing and geriatric patients from the perspective of health, functional, psychological, and social aspects. Students will acquire basic knowledge of the specific physiological and pathological changes associated with ageing, geriatric syndromes, frailty, multimorbidity, and other factors affecting the functional status and independence of geriatric patients. Emphasis is placed on recognising the specific needs of geriatric patients and applying the acquired knowledge in the context of physiotherapy.
Students are theoretically prepared to apply specific approaches in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation of geriatric patients.

Basic knowledge of internal medicine and neurology.

The course is completed with a colloquium, which includes the defence of the seminar paper.
